MATBOARD 101: We get asked all the time, “what's a matboard and why do I need one?”

A matboard, alternatively referred to as a mat, matte, mount board, or passe-partout (if you want to be fancy), is specifically designed to be positioned between your image and the picture frame. Matboards come in various colors, serving to enhance the aesthetics of your images by offering a wide selection of hues to choose from.
Why use a matboard?

PROTECTION: A picture mat serves as a safeguard for the image enclosed within the frame, shielding it from potential moisture damage. It creates a slight gap, minimizing the likelihood of direct contact between the image and the glass, where condensation typically accumulates. In this process, the matboard typically absorbs moisture initially, thus mitigating the buildup of condensation on the glass. Conservation matting, which is acid free is necessary to protect original artwork as it will never yellow or damage your art.
DECORATION: Sometimes, a frame positioned closely to an image can become overly conspicuous. Incorporating a matboard can be beneficial as it creates a visual separation between the frame and the artwork. By selecting appropriate colors around your image, you can effectively guide your gaze towards the image itself, enhancing the prominence of its key colors. We of course have hundreds of colors and you can customize your matboard anyway you like.
